Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 350 Ukrainian and international artists and 137 media workers have been killed. These tragic losses highlight not only the scale of the war but also Russia’s deliberate attempt to destroy Ukraine’s cultural and intellectual potential. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine.
The Ministry emphasizes that the current Russian strategy mirrors the brutal repressions of the 1920s and 30s, known as the “Executed Renaissance,” when the Soviet regime systematically eliminated the Ukrainian cultural elite. Today, Russia continues this policy of destruction, viewing the Ukrainian intelligentsia as a primary target in its war against national identity.
Despite the constant danger, Ukrainian artists continue to create under fire, serving as the voice of the nation on the global stage. Simultaneously, international and Ukrainian journalists work in high-risk zones, documenting war crimes and uncovering the truth for the international community.
