In the reality of modern high-tech warfare, where FPV drones have become one of the primary threats on the battlefield, the security of military logistical routes is paramount. As Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation, reported on his official Telegram channel, Ukrainian forces have constructed over 822 kilometers of anti-drone protection along critical logistical routes in frontline regions since the beginning of the year. This large-scale engineering effort, designed to safeguard troop movements and ensure uninterrupted supplies, is being carried out by the State Special Transport Service.
The vulnerability of frontline roads has intensified due to the dominance of tactical-level unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Any movement of vehicles—whether delivering ammunition or evacuating wounded soldiers—is instantly detected by enemy reconnaissance drones, followed by kamikaze drone strikes. In response to this existential threat, Ukrainian engineers have pioneered innovative passive protection methods. For instance, in the Sumy region, specialized ‘anti-drone tunnels’ are being actively deployed. These structures utilize highly durable netting stretched over roads, which physically blocks FPV drones from reaching their targets. Alongside these defensive installations, road reconstruction remains a priority. Since January, more than 170 kilometers of damaged roads have been restored, enabling Ukrainian military vehicles to navigate at higher speeds, thus minimizing their exposure to hostile fire.
The pace of these engineering operations has been remarkably swift. In May alone, units built over 211 kilometers of anti-drone barriers and repaired approximately 38 kilometers of heavily damaged road segments. An additional 115.5 kilometers of roads in frontline areas were restored during the same period. This engineering push is crucial as Russia continues to exert pressure across multiple axes, including the southern and eastern fronts, where secure logistics directly dictate the resilience of Ukrainian defensive lines. Fast medical evacuation and timely rotations depend heavily on these protective networks. Ultimately, the systemic implementation of passive defense measures on key highways is saving lives and preserving Ukraine’s tactical capabilities.
