Fatal Bus Crash in Bulgaria: The Growing Risks of International Routes for Ukrainians

Ukrainian passenger bus involved in an accident in Bulgaria

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has officially confirmed a tragic road accident involving a Ukrainian-registered tourist bus near the Bulgarian-Turkish border. As reported by Interfax-Ukraine citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, the crash claimed the lives of two Ukrainian citizens and left 16 others with injuries of varying severity. This devastating incident once again highlights the critical issue of passenger safety on international bus routes, which remain the primary mode of cross-border transport for Ukrainians amid the ongoing closure of the country’s airspace due to the war.

According to preliminary data, the tragedy unfolded on the highway between Burgas and Malko Tarnovo, close to the border checkpoint with Turkey. The bus was operating on the popular Odesa-Istanbul route, carrying 39 Ukrainian citizens, including 37 passengers and two drivers. The circumstances of the crash are deeply alarming: the vehicle reportedly stopped because it ran out of fuel. When the passengers stepped outside and gathered behind the bus, it suddenly began rolling backwards. The heavy vehicle struck the group of people before careening off the road and overturning into a ditch.

The consequences of this negligence were fatal. Two individuals died at the scene, while 16 others, including children, sustained injuries. Consular officials confirmed that the victims received immediate medical assistance. Six severely injured passengers were hospitalized in Burgas, and ten others were taken to an emergency care center in Malko Tarnovo for evaluation. The remaining passengers who avoided physical injuries were provided with temporary accommodation and food. Ukrainian consuls in Bulgaria are maintaining constant contact with local law enforcement and medical staff. Alternative transport is being arranged to ensure the uninjured travelers can continue their journey to Istanbul by April 23.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Just a week prior, a minibus carrying six Ukrainians overturned in Poland, injuring the driver and a passenger. Additionally, a recent crash involving a tourist bus in the Canary Islands also resulted in casualties. These recurring accidents point to systemic issues within the international bus transportation sector. Key risk factors include the poor technical condition of vehicles, violations of driver resting schedules, and overall negligence by carrier companies.

The fact that an international bus traveling a route of over a thousand kilometers ran out of fuel is a glaring indicator of logistical incompetence. Furthermore, the driver’s failure to properly secure the vehicle on an incline directly caused the fatalities. Bulgarian regional police have detained the driver, and a thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and liability. To prevent future tragedies, European and Ukrainian regulatory bodies must implement stricter controls, enforce rigorous vehicle inspections, and utilize digital monitoring tools. Ukrainian citizens traveling abroad deserve guaranteed safety, not a gamble with negligent carriers.
