In his latest video address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that every nation bordering the Russian Federation must heed Moscow’s hostile rhetoric regarding Armenia as a clear warning for their own national security. The President emphasized that the citizens of Armenia are the sole arbiters of their nation’s future. He warned that the Kremlin’s pressure on Yerevan is a broad signal showing that no neighbor of Russia can feel entirely secure unless proactive, collective defense measures are established.
The geopolitical tension around Armenia has escalated significantly following Yerevan’s foreign policy pivot toward closer relations with the European Union and the United States. In response, Moscow has employed its traditional playbook of economic and diplomatic coercion. Russia restricted the import of Armenian agricultural products, flowers, and alcohol, and went as far as threatening to freeze energy supplies. This hostile campaign culminated in Russia recalling its ambassador to Armenia “for consultations,” indicating a severe rupture in bilateral diplomatic relations.
According to Zelenskyy, the only viable response to such hybrid threats is the strengthening of regional political alliances, the development of modern defense production capabilities, and the complete diversification of economic and energy channels. By systematically dismantling reliance on Russian markets and energy, sovereign nations can effectively disarm Moscow’s primary leverage of intimidation.
Furthermore, the Ukrainian President appealed directly to European leaders, calling for a highly principled, strong, and timely response to Moscow’s maneuvers. He declared that Europe has no right to lose a single country or abandon any nation to Russian revisionism. Zelenskyy underlined that immediate and consolidated European support must be extended to Armenia, Moldova, the Baltic states, Azerbaijan, and the people of Georgia. Ensuring the resilience of these democracies, he concluded, remains a vital, shared European responsibility in safeguarding continental peace and stability.
