Following a massive Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged international partners to contribute to the PURL initiative, designed to finance the purchase of U.S.-made weaponry for Ukraine, as stated on his official Telegram channel. The President emphasized that current air defense capabilities must be urgently bolstered to mitigate the existential threat posed by Russian aggression against civilians.
During the latest bombardment, over 20 locations were struck in the capital, including residential buildings, emergency services, scientific institutes, and hotels. Zelenskyy highlighted that investing in the PURL program is a direct lifeline for Ukrainian citizens. He noted that every bilateral security agreement helps, yet the priority remains obtaining licenses for Patriot systems and expanding domestic production of anti-ballistic missile technology. Such measures are considered essential to halting the war and preventing further civilian casualties.
This night attack involved a record-breaking combination of approximately 74 missiles and nearly 500 drones. While Ukrainian air defense intercepted a vast majority of the incoming threats, the impact resulted in significant loss of life and injuries among civilians. The international community has responded swiftly to the tragedy. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas has expressed her intention to propose a new, tougher round of sanctions against the Russian Federation to penalize Moscow for its targeting of urban centers.
Kyiv remains in a state of recovery as emergency services work around the clock to clear debris and assist the victims. The Ukrainian leadership continues to stress that the path to peace lies through the robust defense of its skies and the systematic neutralization of the enemy’s logistics and military capabilities.
