According to Zelenskyy’s official statement on Facebook, the leaders discussed resisting Moscow’s heavy-handed interference and laying the groundwork for future good-neighborly relations based on true independence for both sovereign nations.
Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine has never posed a threat to Belarus and expressed deep gratitude to those Belarusian citizens who are currently fighting alongside Ukrainian forces. The primary focus of the talks was Russia’s relentless attempts to fully drag the Belarusian military into the ongoing war. Zelenskyy and Tsikhanouskaya discussed joint efforts to counter these provocations and raise international pressure on both Vladimir Putin’s and Alexander Lukashenko’s regimes.
Tsikhanouskaya’s historic first visit to Kyiv began with a deeply symbolic act. She paid tribute to Maria Zaitseva, a Belarusian volunteer who sacrificed her life defending Ukraine. This gesture highlights the shared sacrifice of Ukrainians and democratic Belarusians in their mutual struggle for freedom. Meanwhile, Alexander Lukashenko recently made public statements suggesting his readiness to meet with Ukrainian leadership to discuss bilateral issues. However, Kyiv remains highly skeptical of Lukashenko’s rhetoric, given his complicity in facilitating Russian missile launches and troop movements from Belarusian soil.
By formally hosting Tsikhanouskaya, President Zelenskyy has sent a powerful message to both the Kremlin and the international community: Ukraine officially recognizes the democratic opposition as the legitimate voice of the Belarusian people.
