European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has strongly condemned the latest massive Russian missile and drone strike against Ukraine. Describing the aggression as a clear indication of the Kremlin’s brutality and total disregard for human life, von der Leyen confirmed that the European Union is currently fast-tracking assistance to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.
The scale of the bombardment, which began on the night of May 23, was unprecedented. According to official data, Russian forces launched approximately 690 aerial weapons, including 90 missiles and 600 various types of drones. While Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted 55 missiles and 549 UAVs, impacts were recorded across 54 locations, causing significant damage and civilian casualties. Von der Leyen remarked that such acts of terror are not a sign of military strength, but rather a reflection of the Kremlin’s desperation in the face of its failure to break Ukrainian resolve.
Kyiv bore the brunt of the attack, leading to immediate visits by Ukrainian leadership to the impacted areas to oversee rescue operations. The systematic targeting of urban infrastructure highlights the persistent threat posed by Russian aggression. As the frequency of these attacks increases, the international community’s focus remains on providing not only humanitarian aid but also advanced defense hardware capable of countering the sheer volume of incoming projectiles.
“We stand firmly with Ukraine, and help is on its way to strengthen its air defense systems,” von der Leyen stated in her address.
