On the night of April 18, the Defense Forces of Ukraine carried out a massive strike on the oil refining infrastructure of the aggressor state as part of a systematic campaign to reduce Russia’s military-economic potential. As the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine officially reported, four strategically important facilities of the Russian oil and gas industry were successfully hit. This attack marks another significant step in the Ukrainian strategy of destroying the logistics and supply chains of the occupying army.
As a result of precise strikes by Ukrainian drones, massive fires broke out at several enterprises located hundreds of kilometers away from the front line. Among the targets hit were the Novokuybyshevsky and Syzransky oil refineries, both located in the Samara region. These facilities are crucial for the production of aviation fuel, diesel, and gasoline, which supply the Russian military forces engaged in the war against Ukraine.
In addition to the refineries, the “RPK-Vysotsk Lukoil-II” oil terminal in the Leningrad region was attacked. This terminal plays a vital role in both the export and internal logistics of the aggressor’s petroleum products. The fourth target hit was the Tikhoretsk oil pumping station in the Krasnodar Krai, an essential infrastructure node in southern Russia that ensures the pumping of oil to ports and refining facilities.
All these enterprises are actively involved in supplying fuel to the armed forces of the Russian occupiers. The exact scale of the damage inflicted is currently being clarified, but videos from the scene circulating online indicate serious damage to the infrastructure and prolonged burning of oil products.
Simultaneously with the attacks on the territory of the Russian Federation, Ukrainian defenders continue to destroy the enemy’s rear infrastructure in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. According to the command, a number of fuel and lubricant storage sites of the occupiers in the Mariupol area were hit. Furthermore, the locations of enemy repair bases and military equipment in the settlements of Mangush (Donetsk region), Tokmak (Zaporizhzhia region), and Hrafske (Donetsk region) were also targeted. These strikes significantly complicate the repair of damaged Russian armored vehicles and the delivery of fuel to the front lines.
The Ukrainian army is demonstrating growing capabilities in the use of strike drones and other long-range weapons. Such deep strikes into Russian territory create severe problems for the aggressor’s economy. The oil refining industry is the main source of revenue for the Russian budget, which finances the war. The destruction or damage to primary oil refining units requires long and costly repairs, as most of the equipment in these plants is of Western production, and its replacement is extremely difficult due to international sanctions.
The systematic strikes by Ukraine’s Defense Forces on fuel infrastructure and enemy repair bases are part of a well-thought-out strategy aimed at depleting Russia’s resources. A decrease in fuel production and complicated logistics directly impact the Russian army’s ability to conduct active offensive operations on Ukrainian soil. The military command vows to continue these targeted strikes against the most sensitive and critical logistical assets of the aggressor.
