Ukraine Secures Release of 193 POWs in Major Exchange Mediated by US and UAE

On Friday, April 24, Ukraine successfully conducted another major prisoner of war exchange, bringing 193 of its defenders back home from Russian captivity. The operation was officially announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on his Telegram channel, with detailed corroboration provided by the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War (KSHPPV). This large-scale release highlights Ukraine’s ongoing and intensive diplomatic and military efforts to secure the freedom of all its citizens held by the aggressor state.

The group of liberated personnel represents a broad cross-section of Ukraine’s defense forces. It includes members of the Armed Forces, the National Guard, the State Border Guard Service, the National Police, and the State Special Transport Service. These individuals defended Ukrainian sovereignty across multiple volatile frontline sectors. According to the President, the freed prisoners include many wounded soldiers who are now in urgent need of comprehensive medical care and long-term psychological rehabilitation.

A deeply concerning aspect of this particular exchange is the systematic violation of international law by the Russian Federation. The KSHPPV reported that the majority of these newly freed Ukrainians were illegally held in detention facilities on the territory of Chechnya. Furthermore, Russian authorities had fabricated criminal cases against a significant portion of them. Subjecting prisoners of war to sham trials and criminal prosecution is a direct and egregious violation of the Geneva Conventions. Analysts note that Moscow frequently employs these illegal tactics as a tool of psychological warfare against both the captives and the Ukrainian public.

The demographics of the released defenders underscore the indiscriminate nature of the war. The youngest among the freed soldiers is just 24 years old, having been captured during fierce combat operations on the Donetsk front in 2023. The oldest is 60. Poignantly, two of the servicemen will celebrate their birthdays today, breathing the air of freedom on their native soil rather than in a hostile prison cell.

Executing an exchange of this magnitude requires complex, multi-layered international diplomacy. The Coordination Headquarters expressed profound gratitude to the United States and the United Arab Emirates for their crucial mediation roles. The involvement of Middle Eastern and Western partners has proven instrumental in breaking diplomatic deadlocks with Moscow regarding humanitarian issues.

This successful operation follows closely on the heels of the Easter exchange on April 11, when 182 Ukrainians—comprising 175 military personnel and seven civilians—were returned home. Despite the relentless and brutal nature of the ongoing conflict, Ukraine’s leadership continues to prioritize the return of its people. Zelenskyy specifically thanked the frontline units whose tactical successes continually replenish the exchange fund, making these life-saving negotiations possible.

The 193 returning heroes will now undergo immediate medical evaluations, psychological support protocols, and reintegration programs as Ukraine vows to keep fighting for those who remain behind enemy lines.
