According to the official data from the State Customs Service, Ukraine’s trade turnover for the first four months of 2026 amounted to $46.1 billion. The trade balance reflects the current economic reality of the country: imports totaled $32.2 billion, while exports reached $13.9 billion. This gap underscores Ukraine’s heavy reliance on imported technology, fuel, and industrial machinery, which are vital for both civilian survival and the defense sector.

Taxable imports accounted for $22.3 billion, representing 69% of the total incoming goods. The fiscal efficiency of customs clearance remains a cornerstone of the national budget. Three major categories—machinery and transport equipment, fuel and energy, and chemical products—constituted 72% of all imports. Specifically, fuel and energy imports generated 36% of all customs revenue, highlighting their critical importance for the energy grid’s stability under the pressure of ongoing infrastructure security challenges.

Regarding trade partnerships, China remains the primary source of imports with $8.7 billion, followed by Poland ($3.1 billion) and Turkey ($2.2 billion). Conversely, the export landscape shows a clear shift toward EU integration. Poland, Turkey, and Italy are currently the main destinations for Ukrainian goods. Food products dominated the export sector, bringing in $8.5 billion, followed by metals and machinery.

Despite the massive challenges posed by the ongoing conflict, Ukraine is actively replacing Russian supplies in European markets, particularly in the agricultural sector. The government is also looking forward to large-scale international agreements to bolster the economy further. The sustained flow of customs duties and the integration of Ukrainian manufacturers into global supply chains are essential for maintaining macroeconomic stability and supporting the defense of the nation against external threats.
