The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has officially announced the introduction of a new 2,000 hryvnia denomination, as reported by the central bank. Set to enter circulation on September 4, 2026, the new banknote pays tribute to Vasyl Stus, the iconic Ukrainian poet, dissident, and human rights activist. The design features his portrait on the obverse, while the reverse depicts the Donetsk National University, where Stus studied, symbolizing the nation’s cultural roots in its eastern territories.
From an economic perspective, the NBU highlights that the new 2,000 UAH note will improve operational efficiency for both the state and the private sector. It is expected to reduce logistics costs for the national bank, streamline cash processing for commercial lenders, and simplify retail transactions for businesses and the general public. In a time of war, such financial adjustments are crucial for maintaining the resilience of the domestic economy.
Technologically, the new bill is a state-of-the-art security achievement. Measuring 75 x 166 mm and printed in a vibrant blue, the banknote incorporates over 20 advanced anti-counterfeiting features. Most notably, it features the innovative Anima™ Colour windowed security thread. This marks the world’s first implementation of this technology: a polychrome, animated thread that transitions from the Ukrainian trident to the hryvnia symbol when tilted. Additionally, the note includes the SPARK optical-variable element, which shifts colors from magenta to golden-green, providing an intuitive way for citizens to verify authenticity.
Beyond the financial utility, the choice of Vasyl Stus is a powerful ideological statement. By placing a national hero known for his resistance against totalitarianism on the highest denomination note, Ukraine reinforces its commitment to its cultural memory and democratic values.
