President Volodymyr Zelensky held a strategic meeting on Wednesday to discuss the policy of national memory and the honoring of national heroes. According to a statement released on the official Telegram channel of the President of Ukraine, the key outcome was the launch of an ambitious project to establish a Pantheon of Outstanding Ukrainians.
The initiative is designed to create a sacred memorial space in the center of Kyiv, serving as a symbol of the nation’s historical continuity and value consolidation. Zelensky stressed the monumental scale of the task, noting that it will require the collaboration of various state institutions, civil society, and international partners. “We must create a special place for the value consolidation of the Ukrainian people, which will definitely have meaning for future generations and preserve the memory of those who created our culture and our state,” the President stated.
A central component of the Pantheon project is the return and reburial of historical figures whose remains are currently scattered across the globe. For decades, many prominent Ukrainian political leaders, military commanders, and cultural figures have rested in foreign cemeteries. The Ukrainian government has already identified dozens of such graves worldwide. The goal is to bring these fundamental figures back home, recognizing their crucial role in shaping Ukrainian national consciousness and statehood.
Repatriating the remains of national heroes is a complex endeavor. It involves intricate legal procedures and sensitive diplomatic negotiations, especially since graves are located in both allied and unfriendly nations. However, due to the ongoing challenges and the need to prioritize immediate survival, the full-scale construction of the Pantheon is expected to commence only after the stabilization of the country’s economy.
