Ukraine is urging the global video-sharing platform YouTube to immediately block advertisements and promotional content related to ‘Alabuga Polytech’, a sanctioned Russian facility where minors are reportedly forced to assemble deadly combat drones. The demand was articulated in a joint statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, highlighting Russia’s alarming use of digital platforms to recruit youth into its military-industrial complex.
According to Ukrainian officials, extensive advertising integrations for the ‘Alabuga Polytech’ project have been appearing on YouTube without adequate moderation or any response from the platform’s management. This so-called educational initiative is a core component of the Alabuga Special Economic Zone located in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. Once an industrial park attracting foreign investment, Alabuga has been transformed into Russia’s largest manufacturing hub for Iranian-designed Shahed-type loitering munitions. The facility operates under strict international sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom.
Kyiv’s particular concern lies in Moscow’s cynical manipulation of the esports industry as a hybrid propaganda tool. On April 25, a major Counter-Strike 2 tournament was broadcast on the popular streaming platform Twitch, serving as a disguised recruitment drive for the Alabuga facility. While Twitch reacted swiftly by blocking the accounts responsible for streaming and promoting the sanctioned entity, tech giants like YouTube and Google have yet to take any decisive action against similar content, allowing the aggressor state to continue spreading its militaristic messaging to a massive global audience.
Ukrainian diplomats stress that esports and digital entertainment platforms must not serve as a smokescreen for the militarization of education or the recruitment of teenagers into the production of weapons of mass terror. Multiple independent investigations have revealed that due to severe labor shortages at Russian defense plants, college students at Alabuga Polytech—many of whom are underage—are coerced into working exhausting 12-hour shifts in hazardous conditions. Refusal to participate in this mandatory ‘practice’ reportedly results in expulsion and exorbitant financial penalties.
The assembly of these kamikaze drones on Russian soil involves direct coordination with Iranian military officials. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) previously issued an absentee notice of suspicion to Brigadier General Abdollah Mehrabi, head of the Aerospace Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Investigators established that Mehrabi was instrumental in supplying engines and components for the Shahed drones. In January 2023, he visited Yelabuga alongside other Iranian representatives to oversee the launch of the mass production lines.
As Ukraine continues to defend itself against ongoing Russian aggression, the nation is demanding stricter enforcement of international sanctions across all domains, including the digital information space. Ukrainian authorities are calling on Google and YouTube to conduct a thorough internal investigation, assume corporate responsibility, and permanently remove all content that promotes or finances sanctioned Russian military enterprises.
