Ukraine and Germany have established a joint working group to discuss mechanisms for the potential return of military-age Ukrainian men residing in Germany, as stated by Ukraine’s Ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, in an interview with Ukrinform. The initiative comes as Kyiv seeks to strengthen its defense capabilities while coordinating with European partners.
According to the diplomat, the effort focuses on two main components. The first involves the ‘Unity Hub’ initiative—centers designed to engage the Ukrainian community in Germany, provide support, and clarify options for returning home. The second component is a collaborative effort between the two nations’ government agencies to exchange information regarding individuals who have left Ukraine illegally. While Ambassador Makeiev did not disclose the specific legal mechanisms currently under discussion, he confirmed that the working group is actively addressing the matter.
The issue is part of a broader discourse on mobilizing resources for the war effort. The Ukrainian government, led by President Volodymyr Zelensky, has voiced support for the position expressed by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding the return of young men to Ukraine.
