The Price of Aggression: Over 1.3 Million Russian Troops Casualties Since Invasion

Over the past 24 hours, the Russian occupation army lost 1,080 personnel in Ukraine, both killed and wounded. This update was officially released by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the morning of May 9. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, total Russian casualties have reached an staggering 1,340,270 people.

In addition to heavy personnel losses, the Russian military continues to see its equipment destroyed at an alarming rate. Within the last day, Ukrainian forces eliminated 82 artillery systems, 1 main battle tank, 2 MLRS, and 1 air defense system. Perhaps most notably, the use of drones remains high, with 1,479 operational-tactical UAVs destroyed in a single day, highlighting the intense nature of the current technological and aerial warfare.

Military analysts note that April remained a record-breaking month for Russian attrition, with over 35,000 casualties recorded. Reports indicate that Russia is losing approximately 254 soldiers for every kilometer of Ukrainian territory it manages to occupy, with that figure spiking to 428 in the Donetsk region. This “meat grinder” tactic continues to decimate the Russian ranks, proving that the Kremlin’s willingness to sacrifice its citizens for incremental territorial gains remains high.

Despite the current intensity of the fighting, Ukrainian authorities have recently described the situation on the front lines as the most favorable it has been in the last ten months. While the enemy continues to press in certain sectors, as discussed in our analysis of recent Russian movements in Donetsk, the sheer scale of the losses is placing immense pressure on the Russian military apparatus. These mounting figures underscore a war of attrition where the sustainment of the Russian war machine is increasingly at risk due to the sheer volume of lost personnel and hardware.

As the conflict continues, the endurance of the Ukrainian Armed Forces remains the pivotal factor in halting the Russian advance. The numbers provided by the General Staff serve as a grim reminder of the costs associated with the ongoing defense of Ukrainian sovereignty and the high price Russia is paying for its war of choice.
