The prospect of direct negotiations between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has once again become a focal point in international politics. The Kremlin recently indicated its theoretical readiness for such a meeting, albeit with strict conditions. According to a statement by press secretary Dmitry Peskov, talks can only occur to finalize already reached agreements. However, Ukraine firmly rejects the aggressor’s ultimatums. Official reports from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine confirm that Kyiv is ready for diplomatic dialogue solely to resolve key issues. Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy unequivocally stated that he will not travel to Russia, instead challenging Putin to come to Kyiv.
The Kremlin’s Illusory Readiness for Dialogue
Dmitry Peskov emphasized that while Putin is prepared to meet Zelenskyy, Russia sees no purpose in talks without a pre-agreed outcome. “Why meet? Putin said he is ready to meet in Moscow at any moment. The main thing is that there must be a reason, and it must be productive, which means finalizing agreements,” Peskov noted. Earlier, Putin’s aide Yury Ushakov reiterated the invitation for Zelenskyy to visit Moscow. Experts view these statements as manipulations aimed at portraying Russia as open to diplomacy while ignoring its ongoing war crimes against Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Uncompromising Stance on Sovereignty
Ukraine continues to defend its national interests relentlessly. Zelenskyy has pointed out that resolving the conflict’s core issues, particularly territorial integrity, requires direct talks with the Kremlin’s leader. Addressing Russian maneuvers, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha clarified Kyiv’s conditions. He stated Zelenskyy is ready to meet Putin to resolve two critical issues: the liberation of occupied territories and the future control of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Furthermore, Ukrainian diplomacy has proposed holding such a meeting on neutral ground, such as Turkey, with the mediation of international partners.
Zelenskyy’s Resolute Counteroffer
Zelenskyy’s reaction to the Kremlin’s calls to visit Moscow was resolute. The Ukrainian leader categorically ruled out traveling to the aggressor’s capital. Turning the tables, he publicly invited the Russian dictator to Kyiv. “It is absolutely impossible for me to meet Putin in Moscow. I can just as well invite him to Kyiv. I publicly invite him, if he dares,” Zelenskyy declared. This statement underscored Ukraine’s refusal to succumb to blackmail, highlighting Kyiv’s demand for equal negotiations respecting Ukraine’s sovereignty. Meaningful talks remain virtually impossible as long as Russian troops continue their occupation of Ukrainian soil.
