As of the morning of July 16, consumers in six regions of Ukraine have been left without electricity following intense Russian attacks on critical infrastructure, as reported by Ukrenergo. Ongoing drone and artillery strikes against frontline areas have caused fresh power outages in the Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Chernihiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions. Repair crews are working to restore supplies wherever it is safe to do so.
Despite the difficult conditions, electricity consumption across the country has seen a slight decline. According to the grid operator, demand fell by 4.5% compared to the previous day as of 9:30 AM. This reduction is largely attributed to clear weather across Ukraine, which has boosted the efficiency of domestic solar power installations. Energy officials are currently advising citizens to utilize heavy electrical appliances between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, when solar generation is at its peak. Currently, no rolling blackouts are expected for the day.
These attacks are part of a broader strategy by Russia to destabilize the Ukrainian home front. By targeting the energy sector, the aggressor aims to increase pressure on the civilian population and the national economy. Partners, including Denmark, have recently stepped up efforts, allocating millions of euros to support the restoration and maintenance of the Ukrainian energy grid.
