Strike on Russia’s ‘Shadow Fleet’: Ukrainian Forces Disable Tankers in Novorossiysk

Ukrainian Defense Forces have successfully struck two vessels of the Russian “shadow” oil fleet at the entrance to the Novorossiysk port. This was reported by President Volodymyr Zelensky on May 3. These tankers were actively used to transport oil and circumvent international sanctions; however, they have now been effectively neutralized.

President Zelensky commended the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Anatoliy Hnatov, along with SBU counterintelligence and the Ukrainian Navy for their precise execution of the mission. The President emphasized that Ukraine’s long-range capabilities are expanding comprehensively, covering operations at sea, in the air, and on land. This operation serves as a strategic blow to Russia’s financial ability to sustain its ongoing aggression against Ukraine.

The strike in Novorossiysk highlights that Russia can no longer guarantee the safety of its assets in ports previously considered secure. By targeting the vessels responsible for maintaining the Kremlin’s war economy, Ukraine continues to systematically degrade the infrastructure that supports the Russian military machine. Each vessel disabled in the shadow fleet directly translates into reduced export revenues for Moscow, limiting its ability to fund the invasion.

As Ukraine continues to innovate in its military strategies, the pressure on Russian logistics remains intense. This operation is part of a broader, persistent effort by Ukrainian forces to disrupt Russian supply chains and military operations deep behind enemy lines. While Russia frequently attempts to downplay the impact of such strikes, the tangible result is the erosion of its maritime logistics and a significant increase in the operational costs of maintaining its oil exports. Ukraine’s ability to strike at such critical infrastructure underscores the evolving nature of the war, proving that the range and precision of Ukrainian defense capabilities are reaching new heights, leaving the enemy with fewer options to protect its strategic assets.
