Strategic Blow: Russia’s Kirishi Oil Refinery Halts Operations After Drone Strike

Пожежа на Киришському нафтопереробному заводі після удару українських дронів

Russia’s massive Kirishi oil refinery has ceased operations following a precision strike by Ukrainian drones, according to Reuters. The attack, which targeted the facility in the Leningrad region, resulted in significant damage to primary oil processing units, effectively bringing production to a complete standstill.

The Kirishi refinery is the second-largest in Russia, with an annual capacity of approximately 20 million tons of crude oil. Reports indicate that three out of four primary crude distillation units (CDU) were heavily damaged, alongside essential auxiliary infrastructure. Local authorities, including Governor Alexander Drozdenko, acknowledged the strike on the industrial zone and confirmed a large-scale fire that hampered emergency efforts.

The strategic impact of this event is substantial. The facility accounts for roughly 7% of Russia’s total oil processing volume and serves as a vital supplier of diesel fuel for both the domestic market and export channels. Situated over 800 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, the refinery’s vulnerability highlights the expanding reach of Ukraine’s drone technology and its ability to target critical Russian economic assets with surgical accuracy. By striking deep behind enemy lines, Ukraine is systematically disrupting the logistical and financial chains that support the Russian war machine.

Analysts suggest that the prolonged shutdown of such a critical piece of infrastructure will force the Kremlin to manage increasing fuel shortages and revenue losses. As the international community observes these developments, it becomes clear that Russia’s energy sector—a primary engine for its military efforts—is becoming increasingly precarious. The strike on Kirishi serves as a stark reminder of the escalating costs of the invasion for the Russian economy, as Kyiv continues its campaign to degrade the enemy’s ability to maintain its military operations at the current scale.
