Spain has announced a substantial new defense assistance package for Ukraine in 2026, which includes 100 VAMTAC armored tactical vehicles and a large batch of 155-mm artillery shells. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine confirmed these plans following a high-level meeting in Kyiv between Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles.
Financial Aid and Key Priorities
During the official visit, Fedorov expressed deep gratitude to Spain for its pivotal decision to allocate €1 billion in military support over the course of 2026. The defense ministers discussed optimal strategies to utilize this resource effectively to meet the most urgent needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the battlefield. According to Fedorov, the strategic priorities of the bilateral defense cooperation focus heavily on strengthening air defense capabilities, securing long-range artillery ammunition, and scaling up the domestic production of Ukrainian combat drones.
The inclusion of 155-mm artillery shells is particularly vital, as they remain the standard NATO caliber used by modern howitzers in the Ukrainian arsenal. A steady supply of these munitions is essential for conducting effective counter-battery fire and maintaining defensive lines against constant enemy assaults.
Furthermore, the mutual agreement to scale up drone manufacturing highlights a shift towards long-term technological cooperation. By integrating European expertise in electronics and communications, Ukraine aims to significantly enhance the resistance of its unmanned aerial vehicles to complex electronic warfare.
VAMTAC Vehicles and Tactical Mobility
Deliveries of the newly announced military equipment are scheduled to begin in May. The 100 VAMTAC (Vehículo de Alta Movilidad Táctico) armored vehicles are primarily designated to reinforce the operational units of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. The VAMTAC is a highly versatile and mobile all-terrain vehicle, capable of reaching speeds of up to 135 km/h.
Its exceptional agility allows Ukrainian forces to rapidly change positions and traverse vast distances. The Ukrainian military has already demonstrated the adaptability of these vehicles by mounting British Rapid Ranger surface-to-air missile systems on them, creating highly mobile air defense units tailored to counter low-flying threats such as strike drones.
Air Defense and the PURL Mechanism
Air defense remains a critical priority for Kyiv. Fedorov highlighted Spain’s crucial financial contribution to the PURL mechanism and its ongoing support in supplying interceptor missiles for the Patriot air defense systems. This continuous support is absolutely critical for defending Ukrainian skies, protecting civilian populations, and preserving energy infrastructure.
In addition to material support, Spain continues to contribute substantially to the training of Ukrainian personnel. By the end of April 2026, the number of Ukrainian soldiers comprehensively trained by Spanish instructors will surpass 9,000 troops. Minister Robles’ visit, which included honoring fallen Ukrainian defenders, reaffirms Madrid’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty.
