The activity of Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups (DRGs) near Ukraine’s northern borders with the Chernihiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions has noticeably decreased over recent weeks. According to a statement by Andriy Demchenko, spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, published by Radio Liberty, this decline does not mean the threat has vanished entirely, but rather points to a significant tactical reorganization of Russian forces along the border.
Russian forces have shifted their focus toward utilizing small infantry units. Their primary objective now is to expand their zone of presence and establish a so-called “buffer zone” along the state border. Previously, Russian command relied heavily on professional sabotage units to conduct deep incursions, mine roads, and terrorize local communities. However, high attrition rates and fortified Ukrainian defensive lines have forced Russia to adapt to simpler, yet persistent, small-group infantry tactics.
This tactical transition suggests that Russia is facing a growing shortage of highly trained special forces capable of conducting complex reconnaissance operations. Instead of sending elite soldiers to certain death, Moscow is using less trained infantry to probe Ukrainian defenses. Ukrainian border guards, in cooperation with other Defense Forces, continue to monitor the border areas using advanced surveillance equipment, drones, and engineering fortifications. This integrated approach allows Ukrainian forces to detect enemy movement miles before they reach the actual border line.
Furthermore, the situation is exacerbated by continuous Russian aerial strikes on border settlements. While ground incursions have decreased, shelling and drone attacks remain high, indicating that the threat is merely shifting in nature rather than disappearing. While the risk of border incursions remains, the vigilance of Ukrainian defenders prevents the enemy from achieving any tactical breakthroughs. The ongoing consolidation of defensive lines along the northern borders ensures that any attempts to build a “buffer zone” at the expense of Ukrainian territory will meet decisive resistance.
