On July 16, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine officially appointed Serhiy Koretskyi, former head of Naftogaz, as the country’s new Prime Minister. As reported by the official website of the Parliament, 289 MPs supported the decision. The appointment comes at a time when Ukraine is navigating an intense defensive war while managing complex economic stabilization efforts.
Addressing the parliament, Koretskyi outlined the new cabinet’s primary focus areas. The government will prioritize national defense and the strengthening of the country’s economic foundation. Koretskyi emphasized that Ukraine’s resilience relies on two pillars: the bravery of the armed forces on the front lines and the endurance of the Ukrainian people, who continue to work and build despite the ongoing Russian aggression. Ensuring the stability of the energy grid and national infrastructure remains a mission-critical task as the country prepares for the upcoming heating season.
Key objectives for the new government include enhancing the domestic military-industrial complex, providing social support for veterans, and assisting internally displaced persons. Koretskyi reaffirmed that European integration remains the strategic objective of the state. He also signaled plans for administrative reforms, specifically the restoration of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy as a separate entity, with Taras Vysotskyi expected to lead the ministry. This restructuring aims to streamline governance in a sector vital to Ukraine’s economic stability.
Koretskyi noted that he is ready to implement challenging measures if they serve the interests of national stability and growth. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the choice of Koretskyi was motivated by his extensive experience in strategic sectors, which will be essential during the upcoming winter period. The transition is expected to foster better coordination with international partners while maintaining focus on the frontline needs.
