The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has successfully prevented a high-profile assassination attempt against a senior Ukrainian Navy officer. As officially reported by the SBU, the plot was orchestrated by Russian intelligence services, aiming to execute the attack by May 9. The Kremlin intended to use this act of terror to manufacture a propaganda narrative for their Victory Day celebrations.
The perpetrator, a previously convicted individual recruited via Telegram, was tasked with monitoring the officer’s routine and ambush him near his residence. He was equipped with a modified AK-74 and clear instructions from Russian handlers. Thanks to the vigilant cooperation of a citizen who contacted the SBU hotline, counter-intelligence and the elite ‘Alpha’ unit were able to apprehend the suspect just before the planned strike.
This incident is part of an ongoing pattern of Russian subversive activities in Odesa, aimed at targeting high-ranking military personnel. Despite the enemy’s persistent efforts to destabilize the home front, Ukrainian law enforcement continues to neutralize these threats effectively. The detainee now faces life imprisonment for high treason and preparation for a terrorist act.
Analysts at Factage Ukraine highlight that these targeted attacks reveal the desperation of Russian intelligence, which fails to achieve success on the front lines against the Armed Forces of Ukraine. By resorting to criminal recruitment and terrorism, the Russian Federation attempts to compensate for its massive military losses. Nevertheless, the systematic work of the SBU proves that Ukraine’s internal security remains robust, successfully thwarting the enemy’s efforts to spread chaos and fear among the defense personnel. The suspect is currently in custody, and the investigation is ongoing to identify potential accomplices.
