On Thursday, April 30, a significant counterintelligence operation concluded in Dnipro, highlighting the ongoing threat of domestic espionage. Law enforcement authorities detained a local woman who served as the administrator of a regional Telegram channel designed to leak sensitive information regarding the positions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. The arrest was officially reported by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). This case underscores how social media groups can be weaponized by the enemy during the war.
According to the investigation, the suspect deliberately created and managed a dedicated chat group on Telegram. Within this community, users systematically published precise geolocation data concerning Ukrainian military checkpoints and reserve command posts operating in the Dnipropetrovsk region. This crowdsourced intelligence gathering poses a direct threat to the safety of defending personnel.
Furthermore, the channel’s participants extensively shared the real-time addresses and movement routes of mobile law enforcement groups and personnel from the Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Centers (TCC). These units operate frequently in the frontline cities of the region to conduct necessary mobilization efforts. The systematic tracking of these units provided Russian intelligence agencies with a comprehensive map of internal security measures and patrol routines.
The SBU emphasized the extreme danger of such digital leaks. The accumulated data regarding military and law enforcement positioning could have been directly utilized by the Russian Federation to plan and execute new series of missile, drone, and artillery strikes against the Dnipropetrovsk region. By pinpointing the locations of defenders, the enemy can optimize their targeting to inflict maximum casualties.
During authorized searches at the suspect’s residence, SBU cyber specialists seized smartphones containing irrefutable evidence of her illicit activities and channel administration. Consequently, investigators have officially served her with a notice of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 114-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This statute criminalizes the unauthorized dissemination of information regarding the location of the Armed Forces. If convicted, the perpetrator faces up to eight years in prison.
This detention is part of a broader, systemic battle against internal informants across the country. Recently, Ukrainian counterintelligence thwarted the operations of two Russian agents from the Zakarpattia region. These individuals were attempting to assess and report specific damages caused by a recent strike involving the Russian “Oreshnik” missile on civilian infrastructure in the Lviv region. In a separate operation, law enforcement exposed another female informant in the frontline city of Kramatorsk, who was caught transmitting the exact locations of Ukrainian troops to Russian handlers.
As the conflict continues, authorities strongly urge citizens to maintain strict information hygiene, reminding the public that sharing military locations online directly assists the aggressor and endangers Ukrainian lives. The investigation into the Dnipro network is ongoing.
