Despite the highly publicized ‘Easter truce’ announced by Moscow, Russian occupation forces have once again demonstrated their blatant disregard for the rules of war and basic human decency. In a stark violation of international humanitarian law, Russian troops deliberately targeted medical personnel in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region during the holiday weekend.
The attack was officially confirmed by Oleg Hryhorov, the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, who released a statement via his official Telegram channel on Sunday, April 12.
According to Hryhorov, the unprovoked strike occurred under the cover of darkness in the Hlukhiv community, an area situated perilously close to the Russian border. ‘Tonight, the enemy viciously attacked a medical vehicle. A Russian drone struck the transport in the Hlukhiv community. Three medics were injured,’ the official reported.
Fortunately, the injured healthcare workers received immediate emergency medical attention. Hryhorov noted that their wounds are not life-threatening, and they are currently recovering. However, the psychological and infrastructural damage caused by systematically targeting emergency services continues to mount. Striking a clearly marked medical vehicle with a combat drone is classified as a direct war crime, explicitly prohibited by the Geneva Conventions.
This incident in the Sumy region exposes the complete hypocrisy of the so-called ceasefire. While the Kremlin and Vladimir Putin’s administration issued cynical public statements regarding the potential extension of this ‘truce,’ Russian forces on the ground used the religious holiday as a smokescreen to intensify their terror campaign against Ukrainian civilians and non-combatants.
Tragically, the drone strike on the ambulance was not an isolated incident during the Easter weekend. Reports indicate that Russian forces also ambushed and killed a Ukrainian evacuation team in the Zaporizhzhia region during the exact period when the ceasefire was supposedly in full effect. These calculated attacks on medics and rescue teams reveal a deliberate military strategy aimed at destroying Ukraine’s capacity to save lives and provide emergency care to residents of frontline and border communities.
The international community continues to document these atrocities. The systematic use of unmanned aerial vehicles against medical infrastructure, coupled with relentless artillery bombardments, underscores the grim reality that Moscow views the targeting of civilian life-support systems not as collateral damage, but as a primary objective of its ongoing war of aggression.
