Ukrainian intelligence has obtained internal Russian documents exposing the severe economic decline within the aggressor state. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the findings in his official Telegram channel, highlighting that Moscow is desperately attempting to conceal these figures from both the international community and its own citizens. The documents confirm that Western sanctions combined with precision strikes on Russian energy infrastructure are inflicting deep structural damage.
The most critical signal of the ongoing collapse is the massive downturn in the oil sector. Internal data shows that a single Russian oil company has been forced to mothball nearly 400 wells. Due to the geological specificities of Russian extraction, these wells are effectively lost, as restarting them is technically difficult and financially prohibitive. Furthermore, oil refining capacity in the Russian Federation has dropped by at least 10% this year. These losses are a direct result of Ukrainian long-range drone strikes on key refineries and export terminals, which have severely disrupted Moscow’s primary source of revenue.
The financial sector is similarly hemorrhaging. Eleven Russian banks are currently preparing for total liquidation due to insurmountable financial instability, while eight other institutions are struggling to survive without external emergency support. Meanwhile, the federal budget deficit has ballooned to nearly $80 billion within the first five months of the year, a figure that becomes even more alarming when viewed alongside the widespread bankruptcy of regional budgets across the country.
President Zelensky has tasked the Foreign Intelligence Service to disseminate this data to international partners. The intelligence reports also reveal that Russia is actively seeking to bypass sanctions by involving foreign companies in the exploitation of occupied Ukrainian territories, such as the illegal export of grain from Crimea. Furthermore, the Kremlin is attempting to lure democratic nations into providing technology and capital for its Arctic oil and gas projects. Kyiv is tracking these maneuvers and actively working to disrupt them, ensuring that the Russian war machine remains starved of both funds and critical components. As the economic reality bites, the internal strain within Russia continues to escalate, signaling that the current trajectory of the Russian economy is unsustainable under the weight of sustained global pressure and domestic mismanagement.
