Russian Drones Strike Residential Buildings in Sumy: Multiple Casualties Reported in Evening Attack

On Friday evening, April 10, Russian attack drones once again targeted civilian infrastructure in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, striking two separate residential apartment blocks and leaving multiple people injured. The attacks underscore the ongoing, systematic bombardment of border regions by Russian forces, which increasingly target civilian populated areas.

Oleg Grygorov, the Head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, reported the details of the consecutive strikes on his official Telegram channel. According to Grygorov, the first drone struck shortly after 6:00 p.m. local time, hitting a five-story apartment building. Images released by the administration showed severe damage to the building’s roof, shattered windows, and debris scattered across the surrounding area. While no severe physical injuries were immediately reported from the first impact, emergency medical teams treated at least one woman who suffered an acute stress reaction.

However, the assault on the city did not end there. Later in the evening, Grygorov announced a second, potentially more devastating attack. He published footage showing a severely damaged multi-story residential building, with significant structural destruction resulting from a direct hit.

“A targeted strike on civilian infrastructure. Preliminarily, there are casualties,” the official stated, adding that emergency responders, including firefighters, police, and paramedics, were immediately dispatched to the scenes to conduct search and rescue operations. The full extent of the damage and the exact number of victims are currently being determined by local authorities.

The city of Sumy, located dangerously close to the Russian border, has been subjected to relentless attacks involving artillery, guided aerial bombs, and Iranian-designed loitering munitions. The strikes often occur without sufficient warning, leaving civilians with minimal time to reach shelters and severely straining local emergency services.

This latest assault is part of a grim pattern of attacks on the regional capital. Just a week prior, Russian forces launched a similar drone strike targeting residential areas in Sumy. In that incident, an unmanned aerial vehicle crashed into the upper floors of a multi-story building, igniting a massive fire and leaving at least three civilians injured.

Furthermore, in late February, Russian troops struck a hotel in the very center of Sumy. Showcasing a highly condemned and lethal tactic known as a “double-tap” strike, Russian forces launched a secondary attack on the exact same location while emergency crews were actively extinguishing the fire and searching for survivors. This deliberate tactic is specifically designed to maximize casualties among first responders.

As the war continues, the persistent targeting of non-military infrastructure in border cities like Sumy highlights the immense toll the ongoing conflict continues to take on Ukrainian civilians, further emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced air defense systems in the region.
