Russian occupation forces continue their deliberate campaign of terror against Ukrainian civil and transport infrastructure, launching another dangerous attack on the railway sector. According to an official statement by the Ministry for Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine, a Russian strike drone targeted and hit an electric locomotive belonging to the state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia in the Zaporizhzhia region. Fortunately, a major tragedy with casualties was averted due to the highly professional and swift actions of the railway staff.
According to official reports, a dedicated monitoring group detected the approaching enemy drone in a timely manner, allowing authorities to immediately trigger air raid alerts and evacuate the personnel. At the moment of the direct UAV impact on the locomotive, the entire crew was already safe inside a nearby bomb shelter. As a result, no railway workers or civilians were injured in the strike, though the locomotive itself sustained critical damage and will require extensive repairs.
This incident is part of a broader, systematic pattern of Russian attacks aimed at paralyzing Ukraine’s logistics, transport hubs, and critical infrastructure. As Russia intensifies its attacks on civilian targets near the frontlines, the railway network remains a primary target. Throughout the full-scale invasion, Ukraine’s railways have served a vital humanitarian purpose, enabling the evacuation of millions of citizens and the transport of essential medical and food supplies. Disrupting this network is key to Russia’s strategy of destabilization.
This is not the first time railway transport in the Zaporizhzhia region has come under fire. Previously, Russian forces targeted a suburban passenger train with a drone, with the munition exploding close to one of the carriages and injuring two passengers. According to Ukrainian law enforcement data, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russian strikes on railway infrastructure have claimed the lives of at least 165 people, including both railway employees and passengers. Despite the constant threat, Ukrainian railway workers continue their courageous operations, proving the resilience of the nation’s transport system.
