Russian occupation forces continue their systematic terror campaign against Ukraine’s southern regions, deliberately targeting critical and port infrastructure. On Friday morning, April 10, another massive attack involving strike drones hit one of the commercial ports in the Odesa region. The hostile drone raid resulted in significant damage to a storage tank, leading to a large-scale oil leak.
Details regarding the incident were officially reported by Oleh Kiper, the Head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, via his Telegram channel. According to his statement, the enemy drone directly struck the territory of the port complex. “In the morning, damage to a reservoir was recorded on the territory of one of the ports. An oil leak occurred without subsequent ignition. Fortunately, there are no casualties,” the head of the administration noted. Specialized emergency services and port workers are currently on the scene, actively liquidating the consequences of the Russian attack and assessing the environmental and material damage caused.
This morning strike was a direct continuation of a prolonged night of terror in the region. Almost entirely throughout the night, Russian forces terrorized the civilian population of Odesa and the surrounding region using Iranian-designed kamikaze drones. The blast waves and falling debris from intercepted aerial targets damaged not only the oil storage tanks but also nearby administrative buildings.
The systematic bombardment of Odesa’s port infrastructure is a clear attempt by the Russian Federation to paralyze Ukraine’s maritime logistics and cripple its export potential. Odesa’s ports play a crucial role in the global food security supply chain, exporting millions of tons of grain, sunflower oil, and other agricultural products worldwide. Attacks on such facilities not only cause severe economic disruption but also pose significant ecological risks. An oil leak of this scale requires immediate containment to prevent hazardous materials from entering the Black Sea ecosystem or contaminating local soil and water resources.
Thanks to the prompt response of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and the absence of a fire, a much larger catastrophe was averted. Had the oil ignited, the fire could have easily spread to adjacent storage facilities, compounding the destruction.
Despite the relentless air raid sirens and continuous efforts by the enemy to destroy civilian and logistical targets, Ukrainian air defense units continue to demonstrate high efficiency. However, the proximity of these ports to the coastline means that even intercepted drones can cause collateral damage upon falling. Local authorities urge residents to strictly adhere to air raid warnings and remain in shelters during such attacks.
