The ongoing war is fought not only on the immediate front lines but also in the shadows of counter-intelligence operations, where Russian secret services continuously attempt to recruit local civilians. As reported by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) on April 27, a female traitor who assisted Russian forces in targeting the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Donetsk region has been sentenced to 15 years behind bars. This case underscores the cynical methods employed by the enemy and the effectiveness of Ukrainian counter-espionage efforts.
The SBU exposed and detained the suspect back in March 2025. To avoid raising any suspicion among local residents and military personnel, the woman used a highly effective cover: she worked as a driver delivering bread to various retail outlets in the front-line settlements of the Donetsk region. Under the guise of these commercial trips, she actively monitored her surroundings and gathered critical intelligence on the deployment of Ukrainian defenders.
Her primary objective was to uncover the locations of reserve command posts, logistical ammunition depots, and defensive strongholds of the Ukrainian forces in the Kramatorsk direction. Given the intense combat in this area, Russian forces heavily rely on precise coordinates to execute devastating strikes, primarily using guided aerial bombs. The mobility afforded by her job allowed the traitor to access areas where the presence of an ordinary civilian might otherwise raise immediate questions.
According to the investigation, the woman caught the attention of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) due to her pro-Russian stance. She regularly posted anti-Ukrainian comments in various Telegram chats, serving as a beacon for enemy recruiters. Following her recruitment, she used her smartphone to photograph military facilities, mark their exact geolocations on Google Maps, and coordinate her subversive activities directly with her FSB handler.
Following her arrest during another reconnaissance mission in a district center, law enforcement seized the smartphone containing undeniable evidence of her crimes. Simultaneously, the SBU and military command implemented comprehensive security measures to protect the Ukrainian troops stationed in the area of her espionage activities. The court ultimately found the agent guilty of high treason committed under martial law.
This severe sentence is part of a broader, systematic crackdown on enemy agents across the country. Recently, another Russian agent detained in Chernivtsi in November 2025 was sentenced to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property. That individual corrected Russian airstrikes on the city and actively called for further attacks on Ukraine’s western regions. Similarly, a traitor who publicly urged the surrender of Ochakiv to Russian forces also received a 15-year sentence. These cases deliver a clear and uncompromising message: collaboration with the enemy will inevitably result in strict legal retribution, as Ukrainian security services relentlessly dismantle Russian spy networks.
