In the early hours of June 2, the Russian Federation launched another devastating, large-scale combined attack on Ukraine’s energy grid, leading to widespread power outages across several regions. According to the state-owned electricity transmission system operator Ukrenergo, the missile and drone strikes targeted key energy infrastructure facilities, causing emergency blackouts in Kyiv, as well as the Kyiv, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Sumy, and Cherkasy oblasts. Emergency repair crews initiated restoration works immediately, operating in areas where the security situation allowed.
The latest strikes have significantly complicated the balance of the national grid. By Tuesday morning, power consumption had surged by 8.2% compared to the previous day. Energy analysts attribute this spike to adverse weather conditions, specifically heavy cloud cover and rain in western and southwestern Ukraine. This weather drastically reduced the electricity generated by household solar power plants, forcing consumers to rely more heavily on the damaged central grid.
In response to the growing deficit, Ukrenergo has urged citizens to practice energy conservation. Consumers are advised to refrain from using multiple high-power electrical appliances simultaneously during the peak hours of 18:00 to 22:00. Instead, energy-intensive tasks should be rescheduled to the midday period between 11:00 and 15:00, when industrial solar generation operates at its highest capacity.
Beyond the extensive technical damage to the power grid, the Russian assault resulted in severe civilian casualties. Dozens of missiles and strike drones targeted urban centers, with Kyiv, Dnipro, and Kharkiv suffering the heaviest impacts. The strikes on residential areas and civilian facilities claimed at least 13 lives and left more than 100 people injured.
This coordinated strike underscores Russia’s persistent strategy of civilian terror and infrastructure exhaustion. To mitigate these continuous threats, Ukraine urgently requires additional advanced Western air defense systems alongside a rapid transition toward a decentralized energy model capable of resilience against targeted attacks.
