On May 19, a solemn ceremony was held in Luxembourg to exhume the remains of Colonel of the Army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UNR) and the head of the OUN, Andriy Melnyk, and his wife, Sofia Fedak-Melnyk. This significant update was confirmed by a public statement by Bohdan Chervak, First Deputy Head of the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine. The event marks a profound moment of historical justice, as a leader who played a pivotal role in the 20th-century Ukrainian struggle for independence finally returns to his homeland.
Chervak noted that the ceremony followed the traditions established during the original 1964 burial, but with a symbolic shift: today, these honors are bestowed by an independent Ukraine. High-level delegations from the Presidential Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory attended the event. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the state is committed to bringing back heroes who protected the idea of freedom while buried abroad. Plans are already underway to honor other historical figures, including Yevhen Konovalets.
The repatriation of the couple was made possible by the Cabinet of Ministers’ Order No. 460, which outlined the official process for the reburial. According to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, funeral services will take place at the Patriarchal Cathedral in Kyiv from May 22–24, culminating in a state ceremony at the Pantheon of Prominent Ukrainians on May 24.
Andriy Melnyk was a towering figure in the Ukrainian nationalist movement. A close associate of Yevhen Konovalets, he led the OUN during turbulent times, enduring both Polish imprisonment and Nazi confinement in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Following the war, Melnyk became a central figure in unifying the Ukrainian diaspora, eventually proposing the creation of the World Congress of Ukrainians.
The return of Colonel Melnyk is more than a symbolic gesture; it is a manifestation of Ukraine’s ongoing effort to reclaim its historical narrative. By consolidating its national memory, Ukraine honors those who paved the way for current sovereignty. Just as the nation builds its future through modern institutional reforms, it simultaneously preserves its roots, ensuring that the legacy of those who fought for freedom remains etched in the memory of the Ukrainian people.
