NATO’s Allied Command Transformation and the NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre (JATEC) have launched a new initiative titled ‘Persistent Airfield Denial’, as reported by the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine. This innovation challenge seeks cutting-edge technological solutions to effectively disrupt the operational capacity of enemy airfields, including runways, fuel depots, and aircraft storage facilities.
Since every Russian airstrike against Ukraine originates from these facilities, neutralizing them has become a strategic priority. The challenge is specifically designed to attract Ukrainian MilTech companies, startups, and engineering teams capable of developing systems that can deny the enemy access to their own aviation infrastructure for extended periods.
‘Every takeoff of Russian aviation for strikes against Ukraine begins at an airfield. Therefore, together with NATO, we are starting a search for solutions to permanently block enemy airfields,’ the Ministry stated. The competition offers a total prize pool of up to 250,000 euros, providing a unique platform for Ukrainian innovators to showcase their expertise within a NATO-standard framework.
Applications are open until July 20, with finalists to be announced on August 11. The initiative highlights the evolving nature of the war, where asymmetrical technological warfare is proving to be as critical as traditional frontline defense. By focusing on the ‘Persistent Airfield Denial’ concept, the organizers aim to generate long-term strategies that limit the ability of the Russian Federation to maintain its air superiority and execute frequent bombing campaigns.
This contest represents a significant step forward in the technological cooperation between Ukraine and the Alliance. By tapping into the agile and highly resilient Ukrainian tech sector, NATO seeks to find unconventional methods to degrade the enemy’s logistics and military capabilities. The winners of the challenge will not only gain financial backing but also the opportunity to implement solutions that could drastically alter the strategic balance of the air war.
