Ukraine is fundamentally transforming its approach to fortifying its territories. A massive and unprecedented construction of a continuous defense line is currently underway on the country’s northern borders, stretching from the Kyiv Reservoir to the city of Sumy. Brigadier General Vasyl Syrotenko, Head of the Engineering Troops of the Support Forces Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, announced these strategic developments in a detailed comment to Ukrinform. According to him, the necessity for such extensive engineering structures is dictated by the extreme dynamics of the frontline, as Russian forces have learned to quickly form strike groups and rapidly redeploy them across different flanks.
General Syrotenko emphasized that the Sumy region has already become a prime example of an effectively organized defense. In a very short period, military engineers managed to build a deep, resilient, and multi-tiered defense system. This network is so massive that its construction process and scale can be clearly observed in real-time via satellite imagery. Simultaneously, heavy resources are being allocated to complete the continuous defensive barrier connecting the Kyiv Reservoir with the northeastern borders as quickly as possible.
The primary objective of these colossal fortification efforts is to prevent any surprise maneuvers by the Russian army from the north. In particular, Ukraine aims to completely thwart the Kremlin’s attempts to create so-called “buffer zones,” which the occupiers use to push Ukrainian troops away from the state border and exert fire control over peaceful areas.
At the state level, a crucial decision was made to increase the depth of defense. While earlier fortification efforts were mostly concentrated within a 20-kilometer frontline zone, the defensive radius has now been expanded up to 100 kilometers. This strategic depth allows the military to securely cover key logistical routes, personnel movement corridors, and critical state infrastructure.
One of the most innovative aspects of Ukraine’s new defense doctrine is the construction of extensive underground tunnel networks. These tunnels will play a key role in stealth logistics, the safe movement of military units, secure access to combat positions, and the rapid evacuation of wounded personnel. According to Syrotenko, the Donetsk region, particularly the Donbas, became the first testing ground for these advanced solutions. The engineering barriers implemented there are currently severely hindering the enemy’s advance.
Successful practices tested in the east are being rapidly scaled to other operational areas, including the Kharkiv, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions. Alongside traditional minefields, several continuous lines of non-explosive barriers with a depth of 120 to 150 meters are being constructed. These are complemented by specialized anti-drone roads and fiber-optic anti-drone systems.
Furthermore, the Ukrainian military is actively introducing high-tech combat solutions. This includes the deployment of robotic complexes powered by artificial intelligence, capable of executing complex combat missions with minimal human involvement.
