In the early hours of July 16, Russian forces launched a massive drone attack on Kharkiv. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported the incident on his Telegram channel, noting that multiple districts were struck during the night, causing significant damage to civilian infrastructure.
According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, several groups of Russian drones were detected heading towards Kharkiv shortly before 1:00 AM. A series of explosions echoed across the city for several minutes. Mayor Terekhov confirmed that hits were recorded in the Kyivskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, and Nemyshlianskyi districts.
The destruction targeted common public spaces. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a strike occurred within a city park, damaging a cinema building, tennis courts, and a parking area. Another impact was reported at a garage cooperative. In the Nemyshlianskyi district, preliminary information suggests a residential building was struck. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to all affected locations to assess the damage and provide assistance to residents.
Kharkiv remains a primary target for Russian aggression, suffering daily shelling that has damaged approximately 10,000 residential buildings since the start of the full-scale invasion. While local authorities have successfully repaired around 4,000 of these structures, the ongoing drone attacks continuously create new destruction. This persistent campaign of violence against the city’s civilian population is clearly intended to wear down local resilience and disrupt urban life. The repeated targeting of residential districts serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing security threat in Ukraine’s frontline regions.
