Ukraine’s state-owned railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, has announced a significant expansion of its high-speed passenger rail network to meet the surging demand of the summer season. According to an official statement published on the company’s Facebook page, several new high-speed Intercity routes will connect key cities starting late June. Most notably, a new daily Intercity train, No. 753/754, connecting Dnipro and Odesa, will launch on June 28. This marks the first time in the history of independent Ukraine that these two major economic and regional hubs are linked by a regular high-speed rail service.
In addition to the Dnipro-Odesa route, Ukrzaliznytsia will launch another daily Intercity train, No. 765/766, between Kyiv and Odesa, starting June 27. The operator is also boosting the frequency of other highly demanded routes. The Kyiv-Odesa Intercity No. 763/764 and the Kyiv-Ternopil service No. 748/747 will now run six times a week instead of three. This strategic enhancement is designed to accommodate the substantial flow of passengers traveling across the country for business, relocation, and seasonal reasons despite the ongoing war.
To achieve this expansion without overloading its fleet, Ukrzaliznytsia is implementing a smart operational model known as the high-speed “triangle” (Kyiv-Odesa-Dnipro). Under this scheme, a single trainset sequentially services multiple routes in a continuous cycle. This innovative approach allows the operator to maximize the daily utilization of its existing high-speed electric multiple units (EMUs), offering more available seats on high-demand routes during peak season without requiring immediate heavy capital investments in new rolling stock.
Operating a reliable and expanded transport network during wartime highlights the resilience of Ukraine’s critical infrastructure. While the physical safety of passengers remains the ultimate priority, Ukrzaliznytsia is also continuing its long-term modernization program. The company recently contracted the domestic production of next-generation passenger carriages. By maintaining robust connection links between the capital, the industrial east, and the southern ports, Ukraine’s railway network continues to serve as the economic backbone of the country under exceptionally challenging conditions.
