According to a report by The Economist, Russian military intelligence (GRU) has drafted comprehensive plans to supply Iran with advanced, jam-resistant drone technology. The leaked documents detail a strategic effort to enhance Tehran’s capability to counter American naval operations in the Persian Gulf region.
The proposal allegedly includes the delivery of 5,000 fiber-optic FPV drones and long-range UAVs equipped with satellite guidance. Russian intelligence analysts highlighted the vulnerability of landing craft to coordinated swarms of 5-6 drones, which could neutralize targets from a distance of 15-30 kilometers. Furthermore, the plan outlined a training program for Iranian operators, suggesting the recruitment of Iranian students currently in Russia, as well as Russian-speaking Tajik and Syrian Alawite proxies, to act as specialized drone squads.
While independent verification of the actual transfer remains elusive, investigative journalist Christo Grozev notes that the intelligence contained in the document is consistent with broader patterns of Russian GRU efforts to destabilize the West. Moscow’s strategy appears designed to force Washington to divert critical military resources from the European theater to the Middle East, leveraging chaos to alleviate pressure on the front lines.
Analysts emphasize that this potential technological alliance marks a significant escalation in the hybrid war between Russia and the West. The tension in the Strait of Hormuz, recently exacerbated by skirmishes involving US and Iranian forces, provides a dangerous testing ground for these capabilities. Although the US administration continues to advocate for ceasefire regimes in various conflict zones, the covert proliferation of drone technology to regimes like Iran severely undermines global stability.
