The widespread attack necessitated the rapid and heroic deployment of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine to mitigate the destruction, extinguish fires, and rescue civilians across multiple affected regions.
The relentless aerial bombardment began at 18:00 on April 25 and continued unabated into the early hours of April 26. Russian forces launched the drones from six different strategic directions: Kursk, Bryansk, Orel, Millerovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in the Russian Federation, as well as from the temporarily occupied territory of the Ukrainian Donetsk region. Military analysts note that the drone swarm consisted of approximately 100 “Shahed” loitering munitions, alongside cheaper, newly developed decoy models like “Gerbera” and “Italmas.” These mixed formations are deliberately designed to overwhelm Ukrainian radar systems and deplete vital air defense ammunition.
The nationwide defense operation involved a comprehensive array of forces, including fighter aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, specialized electronic warfare systems, and highly mobile fire groups. The northern city of Chernihiv bore a heavy brunt of the nighttime assault. Enemy drones directly targeted residential neighborhoods, sparking extensive fires within the city’s private sector. In a particularly alarming incident that underscores the indiscriminate nature of the Russian strikes, one explosive-laden drone detonated in close proximity to a multi-story apartment building. This blast created a severe threat to hundreds of sleeping civilians, resulting in urgent evacuation and firefighting efforts.
Meanwhile, in southern Ukraine, the Russian military continued its systematic campaign to disrupt global food security and paralyze Ukrainian exports by deliberately striking the vital port infrastructure in the Odesa region. The targeted drone strike severely damaged port facilities, agricultural storage warehouses, tanks, and technical logistics equipment. Notably, a civilian cargo vessel flying the flag of Palau, which was peacefully moored at the port for loading, sustained damage during the attack. Such reckless strikes on international commercial shipping demonstrate Moscow’s blatant disregard for maritime law and global supply chains.
The broader region was also impacted. The Dnipropetrovsk region, particularly the Nikopol and Synelnykove districts, faced intense drone and artillery bombardment, resulting in tragic civilian casualties in the Marhanets community.
