On Saturday, April 25, Ukraine was subjected to yet another brutal and massive terrorist attack by the Russian Federation. Preliminary reports indicate that at least four people have been killed, with more than 30 others sustaining various injuries. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the tragic consequences of the overnight assault via his official Telegram channel. According to the data provided by the Ukrainian Air Force, the aggressor launched an unprecedented scale of aerial weapons, including 47 missiles of various types and an astonishing 619 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Devastation in Dnipro and Beyond
The primary target of this combined attack was civilian and critical infrastructure across multiple regions. The city of Dnipro suffered the most severe blow. A direct strike on a residential apartment building resulted in the deaths of two people, while more than 20 others were wounded. President Zelenskyy noted that 11 individuals are currently hospitalized in Dnipro receiving urgent medical care. Search and rescue operations are ongoing at the blast site, as emergency responders work tirelessly to find people who might still be trapped under the heavy concrete rubble.
Attacks on Port Infrastructure
The geography of the attack extended far beyond the Dnipropetrovsk region. Russian forces also targeted the Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Odesa, and Kyiv regions. Notably, military analysts point to deliberate strikes on critical port infrastructure along the Danube River and the Black Sea coast. These systematic assaults on maritime and river hubs clearly demonstrate Moscow’s intent to cripple Ukraine’s export capabilities, particularly its agricultural sector, thereby threatening global food security. The tactic remains unchanged: the enemy heavily relies on strike drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic weapons to destroy ordinary city infrastructure, residential neighborhoods, energy grids, and industrial enterprises.
The Urgent Need for Advanced Air Defense
In his address, President Zelenskyy emphasized that each of these terrorist strikes should serve as a stark reminder to Western partners that the current situation demands immediate and decisive action. There is a critical and urgent need to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. Although Ukrainian anti-aircraft units, mobile fire groups, and electronic warfare (EW) specialists managed to intercept the vast majority of the 619 drones and 47 missiles, the sheer volume of the barrage meant that some projectiles—or their falling debris—inevitably reached their targets, causing devastating fires and destruction.
Overcoming the Drone Swarm
The strategy behind launching over 600 drones in a single night is evident: Russia seeks to overwhelm and deplete Ukraine’s air defense systems, paving the way for heavy ballistic missiles to strike high-value civilian targets.
