Overnight on Saturday, the Russian military launched a massive and highly coordinated drone assault against Ukraine, deploying a swarm of 160 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in an attempt to overwhelm the nation’s air defenses. Despite the unprecedented scale of the attack, Ukrainian defense forces successfully intercepted and neutralized the vast majority of the incoming threats, according to an official statement released by the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The multifaceted aerial bombardment involved a variety of drone types, primarily the Iranian-designed Shahed series, alongside cheaper decoy models such as the Gerbera and Italmas. Military officials noted that approximately 100 of the launched UAVs were Shahed-type loitering munitions. The attacks were launched from multiple strategic locations, including the Russian cities of Kursk, Orel, Millerovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk, as well as from temporarily occupied territories in Donetsk and Cape Chauda in Crimea.
Ukraine’s robust defense response integrated multiple tactical layers. Fighter aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, mobile fire groups, and electronic warfare (EW) systems were all actively engaged in repelling the assault. By 08:00 AM, defense forces confirmed that 133 enemy drones had been successfully shot down or suppressed by EW systems across the northern, southern, and eastern regions of the country. This high interception rate highlights the growing effectiveness of Ukraine’s electronic countermeasure capabilities.
However, the sheer volume of the attack resulted in some drones breaching the defense screen. Authorities reported that 20 attack UAVs hit targets across 10 different locations, while falling debris from intercepted drones caused damage in 11 additional areas. Furthermore, the air alert remained active into the morning, with several drones still navigating Ukrainian airspace.
The consequences of this prolonged air terror campaign have been devastating for civilians. In the northeastern Sumy region, relentless drone strikes and artillery shelling left 23 people injured, with the city of Sumy bearing the brunt of the casualties. Regional medical facilities have been operating under intense pressure to treat the wounded.
Tragedy also struck the southern port city of Odesa. Direct hits from the attack drones resulted in the deaths of two civilians and left two others injured. Local authorities reported significant structural damage to residential neighborhoods and civilian infrastructure. Military analysts suggest that Russia’s ongoing strategy of deploying mixed swarms of lethal and decoy drones is deliberately designed to exhaust Ukraine’s air defense stockpiles and terrorize the civilian population.
