On Sunday, May 31, the Ukrainian national football team kicked off a promising new era under the guidance of Italian specialist Andrea Maldera. In his debut match as head coach, the “Blue and Yellows” secured a convincing 2-0 victory against Poland in a friendly clash in Wroclaw, as reported by the Ukrainian Association of Football. This triumph not only showcased the tactical flexibility of the team but also raised expectations for the upcoming fixtures.
The match began with Poland attempting to dictate the tempo on their home turf. However, Ukraine quickly adapted to the pressure, establishing control over the midfield. In the 17th minute, Viktor Tsygankov found the back of the net after a header from Roman Yaremchuk was parried by the Polish goalkeeper. However, the referee disallowed the goal due to an offside position by Andriy Yarmolenko earlier in the attack. Undeterred, Ukraine continued to push forward. In the 34th minute, Tsygankov intercepted a pass and assisted Yaremchuk, who unleashed a precise long-range shot into the bottom corner to open the scoring. Ten minutes later, Yarmolenko doubled the lead by clinical finishing from close range, once again assisted by Girona’s winger Tsygankov, who finished the match with two crucial assists.
The second half tested Ukraine’s defensive resilience. Poland intensified their attacking efforts, creating several dangerous opportunities. In the 55th minute, a defensive error by Mykola Matviyenko inside the penalty box presented Poland with a clear-cut chance. However, goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin delivered a spectacular save, denying the hosts from point-blank range and preserving the clean sheet. Coach Maldera used the second half to experiment with the lineup, substituting debutant Oleksandr Romanchuk for Valeriy Bondar at halftime.
