In a bold statement marking a major shift in Europe’s defense posture, Lieutenant General Holger Neumann, Chief of the German Air Force (Luftwaffe), declared that NATO is fully prepared to launch massive retaliatory strikes on key Russian military sites if Moscow attacks any alliance member. Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Telegraph, General Neumann emphasized that the Alliance’s response to any aggression would be swift, devastating, and far-reaching.
Neumann outlined several high-priority targets for potential retaliatory strikes, including the highly militarized Kaliningrad enclave, the Kola Peninsula, strategic military installations in the Black Sea, and the area around St. Petersburg, home to Russia’s Baltic Fleet. While expressing hope that direct conflict would never occur, the Luftwaffe chief asserted that the Alliance is ready to defend “every single inch of NATO territory” without hesitation.
According to Neumann, the German Air Force is currently in a state of constant, immediate combat readiness. This enhanced capability is backed by Germany’s extensive rearmament program initiated under Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Berlin is significantly boosting its air defense capabilities by procuring advanced systems, including Patriot, Iris-T, and Arrow 3, positioning Germany as a cornerstone of European collective security.
Despite historical debates within the Alliance, Neumann dismissed any suggestions of division among NATO members. He reaffirmed that an attack on the Baltic States or any other eastern ally would immediately trigger a collective military response. At the same time, the General cautioned against underestimating Russia’s military capabilities. He noted that after years of intensive warfare in Ukraine, the Russian armed forces have shown a high level of tactical adaptation and still possess sophisticated combat platforms—including Su-35, Su-57, and MiG-31 fighters, alongside extensive arsenals of cruise, ballistic, and hypersonic missiles.
