A logistics chief at a Ukrainian military training unit has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the systematic theft of food intended for soldiers, as reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General. The investigation revealed that the officer systematically diverted essential supplies including meat, grains, sugar, and dairy products to sell them to civilians for personal profit.
Between June 2024 and January 2025, investigators documented 59 separate instances of theft. By falsifying accounting records to reflect higher consumption rates than those actually utilized in the dining hall, the official managed to syphon off approximately 500,000 UAH. He was apprehended in January 2025 while transporting stolen goods from the military site in his private vehicle.
The court found the defendant guilty under Article 410, Part 4 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which covers the misappropriation of military property under martial law. In addition to the decade-long prison sentence, the individual was stripped of his rank of ‘Major.’ A separate legal proceeding is currently underway regarding the cafeteria manager, who is accused of complicity in this scheme.
This case reflects the ongoing commitment of Ukrainian law enforcement to purge corruption within the defense sector. While the Armed Forces of Ukraine maintain their defensive posture on the front lines, the systemic rooting out of internal economic crimes remains critical to preserving national resources and maintaining the morale of the personnel serving in the field. The severity of the sentence serves as a stern warning against those who seek to enrich themselves at the expense of soldiers tasked with defending the nation.
