Ukraine is increasingly deploying advanced electronic warfare (EW) systems as a more sustainable, low-cost alternative to expensive Western-made air defense interceptors. According to the original report by Politico, the Ukrainian defense startup Cascade Systems has developed a solution called ‘Lima,’ which disrupts the navigation of incoming aerial threats instead of destroying them kinetically.
The system works by creating powerful signal interference, effectively flooding satellite navigation bands. By substituting the GPS coordinates, the system forces Russian drones and missiles to perceive a false location. As a result, munitions are steered miles off-target, often landing harmlessly in empty fields. Developers note that some drones have been tricked into identifying their location as far away as Peru.
The primary advantage of the Lima system is its accessibility. Priced at approximately 58,000 euros per unit, it is significantly cheaper than a single Patriot PAC-3 missile. Given the high volume of incoming threats, this cost-effectiveness allows for a more comprehensive, layered defense of critical infrastructure. Since early 2024, more than 400 Lima units have been integrated into Ukraine’s security apparatus.
According to data from Cascade Systems, this technology has proven remarkably effective over the last 18 months, neutralizing over 20,500 Shahed-type drones and redirecting numerous cruise and ballistic missiles. This capability is vital for preserving the limited stock of high-end anti-aircraft missiles for more challenging targets.
This shift toward indigenous EW development highlights Ukraine’s resilience and its ability to innovate under extreme pressure. While conventional air defense remains a cornerstone of safety, the proliferation of EW tools like Lima acts as a critical force multiplier. By rendering Russian precision weapons ineffective, Ukraine continues to adapt its defensive architecture to better protect its population from the ongoing campaign of long-range strikes. The integration of such technology is a testament to the effectiveness of Ukrainian defense innovation in the face of a resource-heavy adversary.
