The Kaharlyk District Court in the Kyiv region has handed down a life sentence to a 32-year-old resident of the Obukhiv district following a lengthy trial that began in the fall of 2024. The man was found guilty of a horrific series of sexual crimes against his young niece. According to the Kyiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, law enforcement gathered undeniable evidence proving systematic sexual violence over a prolonged period.

The investigation revealed and the court confirmed at least 29 distinct episodes of rape. The abuse began in the autumn of 2021 when the victim was only eight years old, and it continued relentlessly for three years until September 2024. The young girl frequently visited her grandmother, who shared a house with the accused. Taking advantage of the child’s vulnerability, the uncle committed these crimes in various parts of the property, including the residential rooms, a barn, and the attic.

Following each assault, the perpetrator intimidated the child, strictly forbidding her from telling anyone. Out of intense fear, the young girl kept the horrific secret from her parents and other relatives. One of the most disturbing aspects of the case was the complicity through silence of the rapist’s wife. During the investigation, it emerged that she had once caught her husband in the act but chose to remain silent out of “fear of public condemnation,” allowing the trauma to continue.

The silence was finally broken when the desperate child confided in her older sister. Their mother accidentally overheard the conversation and immediately contacted law enforcement. The police swiftly arrested the perpetrator. The man’s actions were classified under Parts 4 and 6 of Article 152 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which covers the repeated rape of a person under the age of 14.

Throughout the trial, the 32-year-old completely denied his guilt despite the overwhelming evidence. In contrast, the young victim showed immense bravery by speaking in court, stating: “I want my uncle to be severely punished for what he did to me.” Thanks to the firm stance of the juvenile prosecutors, the court imposed the maximum penalty allowed by Ukrainian law—life imprisonment. Dmytro Sitar, Deputy Head of the Kyiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, emphasized that there can be no compromises in crimes against children, stating that a life sentence is the only fair response from the state.

In addition to spending the rest of his life behind bars, the offender’s details will be permanently entered into the Unified Register of Persons Convicted of Crimes Against the Sexual Freedom and Sexual Inviolability of Minors. This national database is a critical tool for protecting children and preventing convicted pedophiles from obtaining jobs involving minors. Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. Recently, similar cases have been reported in the Khmelnytskyi and Vinnytsia regions, where stepfathers were accused of systematically raping their underage stepdaughters. Authorities continue to urge parents to remain vigilant regarding their children’s behavior and to foster a trusting environment where children feel safe reporting abuse.
