Kremlin’s Strategic Ambitions: Is Russia Targeting Sumy and Kharkiv?

Українські військові на бойових позиціях

According to a statement by Vadym Karpyak, a representative of the 8th Corps of the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces, aired on «United News», the primary objective of Russian occupation forces remains the capture of major regional centers. Specifically, the military is monitoring constant attempts by the enemy to break through defensive lines and advance toward Sumy and Kharkiv.

The current situation on the frontline indicates that Russia has not abandoned its expansionist plans. While some analysts argue that Russian movements are merely defensive maneuvers to create a «buffer zone,» Ukrainian commanders emphasize that the enemy is conducting offensive operations. The Kremlin’s strategy focuses on exhausting Ukrainian resources and applying psychological pressure on border regions through continuous shelling of civilian infrastructure.

Karpyak pointed out that Russian forces are not simply digging in for defense; they are actively seeking opportunities to advance. Ukrainian paratroopers defending the Sumy sector report constant attempts by enemy units to press closer to the city. This confirms that the Russian command aims to seize as much territory as possible, disregarding the high costs in manpower and equipment.

The border situation remains critical. Daily attacks on residential areas and civilian facilities are used as a terror tactic to undermine local resilience and complicate military logistics. Despite this, the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to hold the line effectively, adapting to the enemy’s evolving tactics.

The threat to Sumy and Kharkiv highlights that Russia is committed to a forceful resolution of the conflict rather than diplomacy. International support remains vital to sustain the defense effort. Any delays in military aid only serve to encourage the aggressor, who continues to nurture ambitions of occupying major urban centers. The current priority for Ukraine remains the fortification of defensive lines and the provision of necessary equipment to repel these persistent, high-intensity assaults.
