King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden has arrived in Lviv for an unprecedented visit, according to the Swedish public broadcaster SVT. This marks the first time a reigning European monarch has visited Ukraine since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, underscoring Stockholm’s steadfast solidarity and profound moral support for the Ukrainian people in their ongoing struggle.
The 80-year-old Swedish monarch is accompanied by a governmental delegation led by Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Maria Malmer Stenergard. Highlighting the significance of the trip, she emphasized that the presence of the head of state in a war-torn country is a historic event. “Today’s visit together with His Majesty marks the first visit by the monarch to Ukraine since the beginning of the war and is yet another proof of our broad and unwavering support,” the diplomat stated, noting that this solidarity comes not only from the political leadership but from the entire Swedish society.
In Lviv, King Carl XVI Gustaf held a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Swedish parliament and government have officially approved legislation to join the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.
