According to a report by the Israeli news outlet Ynet, this diplomatic track was discussed in depth during a recent 40-minute meeting between Trump and the Patriarch. With Theophilos III also expected to hold talks with Russian leadership later this month, Washington is signaling a shift toward utilizing high-level religious authority to bypass frozen traditional diplomatic channels.
Theophilos III, who heads the Orthodox Church of Jerusalem, historically regarded as the ‘Mother of all Churches,’ holds a unique position of moral authority. In a highly polarized Orthodox world, he is seen as a neutral and respected figure. Unlike Moscow Patriarch Kirill, who has fully aligned the Russian Orthodox Church with the Kremlin’s militaristic agenda, the Jerusalem Patriarch retains his global status as an independent spiritual arbiter. This allows him to speak to both sides from a position of moral and religious credibility, a factor that Trump’s team hopes to leverage.
This is not the first time Theophilos III has been involved in high-stakes diplomacy. He previously acted as a successful intermediary between Russia and Israel, facilitating the release of Israeli citizen Naama Issachar in 2020 through direct engagement with Vladimir Putin. Trump, who has consistently favored personalized, high-impact deal-making over institutional bureaucracy, sees the Patriarch as a non-political figure capable of initiating dialogue where traditional diplomacy has failed.
