Renowned French actor and author Jean Reno has released a new novel, L’Évasion (The Escape), which tackles the harrowing reality of Ukrainian children abducted by Russian forces. The book was officially published in early April by the French publishing house XO Éditions.
In his latest literary work, the acclaimed actor intertwines the intense elements of a classic spy thriller with the tragic, real-world events unfolding during Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. The novel aims to amplify international awareness of war crimes, specifically the illegal deportation, forced assimilation, and ideological indoctrination of Ukrainian minors.
The compelling plot revolves around Emma, a former massage therapist who is recruited by France’s external intelligence agency, the DGSE. Undercover, she embarks on a dangerous and clandestine mission to the harsh landscapes of Siberia to infiltrate a so-called “rehabilitation camp” for Ukrainian teenagers. Her primary objective is to document the atrocities occurring within the facility, including unlawful detention, psychological abuse, and the systematic brainwashing of young minds.
According to Reno, the profound inspiration for the novel struck after he learned about the true stories of abducted Ukrainian children and the staggering scale of the tragedy. In interviews with French media, the actor admitted to being deeply disturbed by the accounts. “I thought it was absolute madness that these children were being abducted for brainwashing. I am not making a political statement; I wanted to turn it into a novel to shed light on this issue,” he explained.
The abduction of Ukrainian children remains one of the most pressing humanitarian crises of the war. Ukrainian authorities have confirmed the illegal deportation of nearly 20,000 children to Russia, while international researchers, including those at Yale University, estimate that up to 35,000 Ukrainian minors may be held in Russian territories. The international community and human rights organizations continue to demand their safe return, labeling the actions as genocidal intent.
Jean Reno’s solidarity with Ukraine is built on personal connections. In 2018, the actor visited Ukraine, spending time in the Carpathian Mountains and Kyiv, to shoot the French-Ukrainian thriller The Last Step, in which he played the lead role. At the time, Reno expressed his profound admiration for Ukraine’s natural beauty and the exceptional hospitality of its people. Through L’Évasion, Reno utilizes his platform and storytelling prowess to ensure that the plight of Ukraine’s stolen children remains at the forefront of global consciousness.
