Ireland has officially commenced its presidency of the Council of the European Union, which will continue through the end of 2026, as confirmed on the official website of the Irish Presidency. For Ukraine, this marks a vital period of potential progress in its path toward full EU integration, with high hopes for opening the remaining negotiation clusters.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the start of the Irish presidency, highlighting the importance of the next six months for Kyiv’s European aspirations. “In July, there is a high probability of opening the remaining five negotiation clusters. There are no substantial obstacles to this,” the President noted. This optimism builds upon the successes achieved under the Cypriot presidency, during which Ukraine launched official negotiations and secured significant financial packages totaling 90 billion euros.
Beyond the integration process, Ukraine expects the Irish presidency to prioritize the escalation of sanctions against the Russian Federation. President Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia has become particularly vulnerable to current international sanctions, and that these successes should be reinforced by bold actions from Europe and other partners. Furthermore, the Ukrainian government intends to deepen cooperation on joint defense programs, viewing the strength and unity of the European community as the cornerstone of continental security.
